Pride and Prejudice in Pakistan. Who can resist that tag line? . The independent, book-loving heroine makes Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal a joy to read. . The plot of Jane Austen's classic has been moved to a wonderful new setting. The Bennets are now the Binat family, living in Pakistan in the early 2000s. . The book sticks closely to the original plot: Five impoverished sisters are under pressure to find husbands. . But, this isn't a straight forward romance. The author looks at the importance of allowing women to make their own choices and the problems with society's expectations. . #soniahkamal #unmarriageable #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookdragon #currentlyreading #valentinesday2018
This gorgeously grotesque book features body parts of all shapes and sizes. . Pick up a copy today. Just don't read it while you're eating. . Little fictionalises the life of Madam Tussaud. . Born in the eighteenth century, this famous woman narrowly escaped the guillotine in France before touring Britain with a macabre set of death masks taken from the Revolution's victims. . Author Edward Carey gives Madam Tussaud (Marie) a strong, consistent voice. She's astute and becomes desensitised to the body parts she handles. . This is a portrait of a talented woman who survived a turbulent time period. . It's a good read for fans of historical fiction - providing they have strong stomachs! . #little #edwardcarey #madamtussauds #booksbooksbooks #currentlyreading #avidreader #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookdragon #historicalfiction
There's something unsettling about books that make you stare mortality in the face. . After I finished The Immortalists I sat down and - for the first time ever - made a bucket list. . Even if I never learn to create a souffle or walk the Pennine Way, it gave me back the sense of control this book rips away. . This story begins in New York in the late 1960s. Four young siblings visit a fourtune teller, who tells each child the supposed date of their death. . It's up to the reader to decide whether the psychic knew the future or if the children's reactions create a self-fulfilling prophesy. . Would I live my life differently if I knew how long I had left? I don't know, but I'm going to give that souffle a go! . #theimmortalists #chloebenjamin #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #currentlyreading #books #bookdragon
Ever since The Book Thief made me sob on the bus I've avoided reading books about World War Two on public transport. . So, when I decided to take All The Light We Cannot See on a train I knew there was a high chance I'd need tissues. . In the end I stayed dry-eyed but it was a close run thing. . Anthony Doerr's beautifully written story focuses on two teenagers in occupied Europe; a French girl who supports the resistance and a young Nazi radio operator. . In their own ways, they're both victims of the war. . At over 500 pages this isn't a quick read. The non-linear story demanded (lots of!) concentration but the writing is beautifully descriptive. . #allthelightwecannotsee #anthonydoerr #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #currentlyreading #booksbooksbooks #epicreads #bookdragon
I'm much too weedy to climb an actual mountain so Milkman became my Everest. . Sometimes it was slow going and exhausting, occasionally I needed a restorative cup of tea, but every second was an amazing experience. . Milkman's eighteen-year-old narrator lives in Ireland during the political turmoil known as The Troubles. She's being pursued (and threatened and stalked) by a married man in his forties. . Not the easiest book to read, Milkman has a wordy style that demands concentration. However, it's very funny in places and offers a creative take on serious subjects. . #annaburns #milkman #manbookerprize #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #fiction #currentlyreading #bookdragon
Laura Carlin's debut novel combines history, mystery, gore and romance. . The Wicked Cometh is a riches to rags (and back again) story that makes me thoroughly glad to live in the twenty-first century. . Set in the 1830s, main character Hester falls on hard times after the death of her father. When a philanthropic family removes her from London's disease-ridden slums she falls in love with Rebekah, one of her rescuers. . People begin disappearing without a trace. Hestor and Rebekah must work together to discover where London's poor have been taken. . This is a slow paced, atmospheric tale, with chilling attention to detail. The style is wordy but vivid. At times I could almost see (and smell!) the slums. . #thewickedcometh #lauracarlin #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #currentlyreading #lgbtbooks #mysterybooks
Calling all book lovers! The Librarian by Salley Vickers catapulted me into 1950s small-town England. . This is an uplifting story packed with period detail (including convincing post-war attitudes). . Main character, Sylvia, is a children's librarian, so expect references to much-loved classics (remember Tom's Midnight Garden and I Capture the Castle, anyone?). . #currentlyreading #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #salleyvickers #thelibrarian #librarybook
